Freshman Board Application
Dear New UGA Student,
Thank you for applying to the Freshman Board.
The Freshman Board was created in 1996 to promote an organized voice for new students at the University. The Freshman Board offers opportunities for leadership development and a great starting point for continued involvement with the Student Government Association.
As a Member, you will represent your class to the Student Government. This representation requires diligence. You will be expected to meet as a group at least 3 hours a week. You will be expected to advocate student interests, which may require you to take positions that seem to be adverse to UGA faculty and administrators.
The application process is competitive. Last year, 115 people competed for 15 spots. The result was the strongest board ever—a group of students who passed SGA bills and saw definitive results: Members had crosswalks installed in the dorm areas, organized a Freshman Forum, and registered many students to vote.
There is a two-stage selection process for the Freshman Board: Application and panel interview. You should submit your completed application to 151 Tate Center by Monday, August 30th at 4PM. Members of the selection committee will review the applications, and post a list of potential candidates for the second round at the SGA office (151 Tate Center) by Friday, September 3rd. Final selections will be made from the panel interviews which are to be held on Sunday, September 5th and Monday, September 6th. Applicants selected for panel interviews should plan to be available during that weekend.
A tip for your application: More effective applications will contain meaningful examples of leadership ability. So, limit your responses to explanations of activities in which you took a leadership role—activities that show your ability to motivate a team, to build coalitions, to persuade opponents, etc.
Best of luck to you,
Chris Hoofnagle, SGA Internal Affairs Chair
