'It is with great concern that we, the Student Government Association of the University of Georgia, have observed the ongoing consideration of the Board of Regents to switch the University System of Georgia from the current quarter system to a semester-like system. Although there is no clearly defined position within the student body of whether or not this university, or any other higher institute of learning, should switch to a semester system, we do realize the need for the passage of the Chancellor Stephen Portch's proposal currently before the Board of Regents.
The Student Government Association holds the position that the student body has been misinformed about the contents of the current proposal. our trust lies with Chancellor Portch when he states that the current proposal is not a binding vote of transformation. The current vote is only a vote to begin the research and transformation from the current quarter system to a new semester system. We realize that a vote of conformation will take place sometime in the future after much research and work has been accomplished throughout the University System.
We, as elected representatives of the University of Georgia student body, feel we are elected to represent the opinions and beliefs of the entire student body as long as they are properly informed, yet 4c,4_~6 the gross misrepresentation of the meaning of this proposal, we feel we must stand up and do the what is right and best for the advancement of this university and the students within.

The Student Government Association pledges its full support to Chancellor Stephen Portch and each and every member of the Board of Regents.
We encourage passage of this proposal and the advancement of the entire system that will follow in the years to come.
We offer every available service we possess to help research and make the possible transition as smooth as possible for students and faculty alike.
We recognize the concerns of the students and hope that all questions are addressed before the vote of possible acceptance into a semester system is taken.
We hope through the upcoming research that the best possible scenario for the UniversLty System of Georgia is uncovered, and that the Board of Re,jents acts on that research.
