SGA Resolution 7-01
Title: Changes in Academic Honesty Policy and Procedures
Author: Nicki Bagley
Sponsor: Academic Affairs Committee
THE STUDENT SENATE AS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STUDENT BODY OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE:
WHEREAS, the Student Government Association completely supports Academic integrity;
WHEREAS, there is currently a proposal to the University Council for changes in the
Academic Honesty Policy and Procedures which states:
1. "If a student is found to have violated this policy (or consents to that finding),
that grade shall administratively be changed to an 'F-X'. The X is a notation
that the 7 was entered because of academic dishonesty."
2. "Any advisor the accused student chooses may attend the hearing with the
accused for the sole purpose of advising the student. Advisors may not
address the panel or question witnesses.
WHEREAS, the current procedure for students accused of academic dishonesty states:
1. The accused student is allowed counsel to be present and to speak on their
behalf;
2. A student which is found guilty is subject to a mandatory minimum of one
quarter suspension with the option of other punishment up to the discretion
of the body hearing the case; and
3. The grade given is up to the discretion of the professor.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Student Government Association finds the
information presented in the proposal insufficient, therefore we cannot accept the proposal
without a clear outline of procedures;
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Student Government Association finds
the assignment of "F-X" to be unfair and'inequitable in its consequences without regard for
the severity of the alleged offense;
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, all students should have the right to
counsel for advisement and representation through all punitive procedures, including issues
of academic dishonesty.
