THE STUDENT BODY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA THROUGH ITS ELECTED MEMBERS OF THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION DOES HEREBY RESOLVE:

Whereas, it has been with great interest that the Student Government Association has
engaged in research and debate over a proposed multi-cultural curriculum
requirement; and
Whereas, the University is charged with preparing students for a changing and
challenging world; and
Whereas, many colleges and professors have understood and begun to address the
specific and practical issues of increased cultural variety in the world; and
Whereas, attempts to impose a "cookie-cutter", one-size-fits-all University-wide
requirement is detrimental to the individual efforts of professors and
departments to introduce pertinent cultural issues in their classrooms; and
Whereas, such a requirement would channel many students unwillingly into political
indoctrination classes which would fuel apathy and resentment in the
classroom; and
Whereas, the Universitys conversion to a semester system is placing a squeeze on
the core curriculum for 1998 so that required hours need to be reduced, not
increased; and
Whereas, the University is a feeder school for transfer students who do not have
access to the required courses in their pre-major years; and
Whereas, the University should recommitt itself to the tried and true core of a
meaningful liberal arts education with more basics in history, English, math
and science which have been increasingly ignored in the past three decades
SGA (08-13)
