THE HOPE SCHOLARSHIP / PELL GRANT RESOLUTION
THE STUDENT BODY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA THROUGH ITS ELECTED
MEMBERS OF THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION DOES HHEREBY
RESOLVE:
Whereas, it has been with great interest that the Student Government Association,
on behalf of the University of Georgia student body, has been made aware
of the request to restructure the particular system of allocating the Hope
Scholarship funds in conjunction with other financial aid grants and
scholarships to students.
Whereas,
under the particular system, funds for students receiving the Hope
Scholarship along with the Pell Grant and / or the Alumni Scholarship, are
allocated to a total amount of that is equal, whether a student receives just
the Hope Scholarship, the Pell Grant, and / or the Alumni Scholarship.
For example, under the current system a student receiving the Hope
Scholarship and $550.00 in the Pell Grant funds would receive a total of
$880.00. This would reduce the Hope Scholarship to only $330.00.
Under the new system a student would receive $880.00 for the Hope
Scholarship and $550.00 for the Pell Grant for a total of $1430.00. There
are several reasons for which the student body requested the restructuring
of this fee allocation system.
Whereas, The funding for the various financial aid allotments are from different
sources. With the Hope Scholarship coming from the lottery funds, the
Pell Grant coming from federal funds, and the Alumni Scholarship coming
from Alumni funds, the student body feels that the three should not hinder
the reception of one of the other financial aid allotments. Also with the
notion that the Hope Scholarship is a merit based award and the Pell
Grant is a need based grant, the student body feels that each student
should not be deprived of an award due to the reception of a need based
grant. This would also permit those needy students to benefit significantly
from their hard work.
Whereas, the new distribution should allow students to receive all three of the
financial allotment in full until their established living expenses, according
to the University System of Georgia, are covered.
