MINUTES OF SENATE MEETING

A meeting of the Student Government Association of the University of Georgia was caled on
Tuesday, May 8, 1990 at 7:30 p.m. in Phi Kappa Hall. Vice-President Ben Calhoun presided.
All Senators were present.
I. SWEARING IN OF NEW SENATORS
SGA President Heath Garrett swore in those senators who had not previously taken an Oath
of Office.
11L OPEN FORUM
A. Phil Smith, president of the Young Democrats, spoke encouraging members of the
Senate to support an upcoming resolution in support of the VOTE'90 Campaign, of
which he and Senator Thomas have been appointed directors by Secretary of State Max
Cleland.
B. Allison Jones, director of education for Students for Enviormental Awareness, also
encouraged SGA support of VOTE'90, which SEA is co-sponsoring. She expressed a
desire for SEA and SGA to work together on enviormnental. issues mentioned in the
SEA audit of the University, including:
1. Cogeneration in the use of steam natural gas and electricity to provide
power and heating/air conditioning to the campus.
2. Efforts to get a statement from the USDA and EPA regarding the
biocontainment center.
3. Transportation - encourage use of bike lanes, buses and carpooling.
4. Water conservation program in dormitories.
5. Ban on polystyrene products.
6. "Bring your own Mug" program in Bulldog Room.
7. UGA did not respond to a requested ban n the use of tropical hardwoods.
8. Stop the use of plastic book bags at the University Bookstore.
III. OFFICER REPORTS
A. PRESIDENT
1. Remarks concerning the overall positive attitude of the new Senate, encouraging
everyone to take the commitment to SGA seriously.
2. Proposals for the meetings must come to executive council on the Sunday evening
before the Senate meets on Tuesdays.
B. VICE-PRESMENT
1. Please be on time to all meetings.
2. The full Senate will meet every other Tuesday. On alternating tuesdays, there will
be mandatory committee meetings.
3. Thank you to those Senators who attended the Parlimentaary Procedure
workshop held last week.
IV. ELECTION OF PRES11DENT PRO TEMPORE
Laura Bourg nominated William Perry, and made several comments on his behalf. Holly
Thomas nominated Laura Petrides, and made comments on her behalf. Both senators
accepted the nomination then spoke for themselves. The question was called to a vote, and
both Senators left the hall. Susie Griffin made a motion for vote by secret ballot. The
motion was seconded and approved unanimously. Willam Perry was then elected President
Pro Ternpore by secret ballot.
