Those in allendance were John Bradbeny, Shawna Hirata, Andy Vanlandingham, Jay Gemes, Ashley Disque, Jay Gemes, William Peny and Edwina Crump, Minonly Affairs Chairman.
John also announced that an SGA Ring Selection Committee had been chosen. One student from each class will represent SGA on this committee.
Jim Day (UGA housing) called John and requested someone from SGA come to the meeting on security at the new parking deck.
Chuck Horton (Chief of UGA Police) talked with the committee for a few minutes. He will be glad to work with SGA and often needs SGAS help to promote things students should be aware of - - crime prevention, the escorr van and also things people are trying to sell students for self protection. The UGA police and SGA need to work together.
Mr. Horton's reply - As a representative of the student body, if you feel more lighting is needed at a particular location, if you take it yourself to the administration you will get more action from them than I would. Mr. Horton also informed the committee that more call boxes were needed on campus and these items are funded by the president's office.
Jay's committee (Campus Safety) is planning to send a letter to all places where lighting is a problem. He will also start a petition and get as many signatures as possible, if they get no response from the first letter, then they will send another letter with the petition.
Mr. Horton's suggestion was not to bother with a petition. I would go through normal channels, beginning with Mr. Cochran. If you have a good cause and approach it with the people, rather than attacking and ask them for their help, you will be more likely to get a positive response. Give them a chance to help before you go on the attack. Make them feel it is their idea. Give everyone the opportunity to do the right thing. Come by and I'll show you a letter on what they say it will cost for more lighting. Go to Mr. Cochran first and ask him what channels you can go through. Get Mr. Cochran's advise - the campus does need more lights.
Jay - The big topics we need to address should be getting more escort vans, more lighting on campus and more call boxes.
