Senate Report:
1. Gift for Mr. Newman. Bust on Floyd.
2. Tom Jackson invited to speak next term.
3. Administrative Organization on the web & in the office & in the notebooks.
4. VPSA going well. The committee is committed to change, if you know what I mean
5. SGA through executive action, has nominated Professor Jere Morehead to the position.
6. The “DAMN!” Show…on cable soon!
7. A-CC is going to non-partisan elections soon, with approval of the legislature. Good news for us. Strongly opposed by John Barrow, the representative in the heavily student-populated District 4.
8. A-CC has put the E-W connector on the back-burner, but the project has not been killed.
9. The Single-Family Definition was upheld against a multi-face attack in a local court last week. This again illustrates the importance of voting in A-CC, because our judges are elected.
10. EAC announces the new and improved web site. www.uga.edu/sga/eac
11. Several Bylaw and Constitutional Amendments come to you tonight for a reading and discussion.
a. 11-15: A Bill to Amend the Bylaws to add a recusal requirement. Recusal is where a person removes herself from making a decision to resolve a conflict of interest. Any professional organization requires recusal when personal/social conflict arise.
b. 11-16: A Bill to Amend the Constitution to add a standing external affairs committee. “To keep government upright, you have to push on it from all directions. Big money interests can wink at someone such as Doc Eldridge, and say, get a judge appointed from their firm. But we need to vote and act as student advocates. Also, EAC has principally acted as an educational tool. (Property taxes.)
c. 11-17: A Bill to Amend the Constitution to allow SGA to choose its own advisor. Currently, our advisor is chosen by the VPSA with consultation from SGA. This amendment will make a pro-student autonomy change. As far as I know, no other student organization has given away their power to choose a faculty advisor. Also, there’s no reason why we don’t have more than one advisor…This is a vote for student autonomy…SA speaks out of both sides of its mouth…purposeful check on our power…ever wonder why Douglas is leaving…a change is needed in SA.
d. 11-18: A Bill to Amend the Constitution to allow SGA to have input into the selection of its graduate advisor.
12. In the event of a runoff, the Sagan Society will host a Presidential Runoff Debate on Monday, March 1st at 7 PM in Dean Rusk Hall Room K.
